I have long researched the principles of church growth for the last 17 years.  Throughout, my experience of ministry, I have never found such a powerful, fascinating spiritual principle as the fourth dimension spirituality proposed by Rev. David Yonggi Cho, the senior pastor of Yoido Full Gospel Church, the largest congregation in the world.  Rev. Cho’s Fourth dimension spirituality has rich implications for effective ministry and mission for world Christianity.  It has become a verified model for church growth and mission today.

Understanding the Fourth Dimension Spirituality

  For Rev. Cho, what is seen was not made out of what was visible (Heb 11:3). The third dimensional world we can see has not evolved by itself, but has been created by the fourth dimension.  For Rev. Cho, the spiritual world is the world of the fourth dimension. In terms of the study of geometry, a line is the first dimensional space and a plane is the second dimensional space.  A cube is also the third dimensional space. The line is controlled by the two dimensional space.  The plane and the two dimensional space are controlled by the three dimensional space, the cube.  Using this metaphor of geometry and its dimensions, Rev. Cho insists that our material and physical world belong to the three dimensional space and the fourth dimension controls this world of three dimensions which consists of time, space, and substance.  Rev. Cho takes the view that in the universe, there are three forces at work: the Holy Sprit of God, the Sprit of Satan, and the Human Sprit of Man.  Rev. Cho takes the perspective that miracles and healings can take place by religious leaders in other religions, but their power is still limited and come under the power and the authority of Almighty God.  Only the power of the Holy Spirit can give order, power, beauty, and creative change to our three dimensional world.  We need to understand the spiritual principles of how the fourth dimension controls the third dimension.  Rev. Cho says that he discovered the fourth dimensional truth in deep prayer through the revelation of the Holy Spirit.  He confesses that his ministry has been revolutionized since he discovered the truth of the fourth dimension. According to Rev. Cho, there are four channels that enable the fourth dimension to change the third dimensional world, which may be called “the fourth dimensional spirituality”.

The Four Channels of the Fourth Dimension Spirituality

(1) Thinking : The first is our thinking.  Thinking is not controlled by time, space, and material. Thinking affects human body, human relationships, work, and circumstances around us.  If we think blue, it affects our body condition.  If we hate others, the thinking hurts me.  Negative thinking brings about negative results in three dimensional world, but positive thinking, positive results. The Bible also emphasizes on the importance of thinking: “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things” (Phil 4: 8). Rev. Cho says that he has always tried to think of the positive things in his ministry and expected God’s blessings.  He has also attempted to change the thinking attitude of the people through the message of the Fivefold Gospels (gospel of regeneration, gospel of the fullness of the Holy Spirit, gospel of healing, gospel of blessings, and gospel of the second coming of Jesus Christ), and the message of hope. He believes that the way of thinking can change the fate of one’s life.  Rev. Cho says that we need to learn how to orient our thinking to God’s thinking, which is God’s word.

(2) Faith : The second is faith.  There is a difference between three dimensional human faith and fourth dimensional faith given by the Holy Spirit.  Jesus said that everything is possible for him who believes (Mk 9: 23).  Jesus stressed the power of faith by saying “if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart and believes what he says will happen, it will be done for him” (Mk 11:23).  The point of what Jesus said is that when we have faith we can change even what seems impossible in human minds.  When we believe, we will see the miracles.  So Rev. Cho says that pastors should help their church members cultivate and develop their faith. Church leaders need to program themselves all the time by faith (e.g. I believe that my sins are forgiven by the blood of Jesus; I believe that the blessings of Abraham are upon me in Jesus; I believe that God makes all things work together for good).

(3) Visions and Dreams : The third is visions and dreams.  Rev. Cho says that visions and dreams are the language of the Holy Spirit in the fourth dimension and God has used this language of the Holy Spirit to change many lives. God chose Abraham and wanted Abraham to dream about his descendants, although Abraham had no children (Gen 13:14-15).  Since we are so limited in time and space, the only way for us to incubate is through our imaginations, through the visions and dreams that the Holy Spirit has given us. Rev. Cho stresses that when the Holy Spirit comes upon us, He will inspire us with His dreams.

(4) Word : The fourth is spoken word.  God created the universe with His words.  Human being was created in the image of God.  So human words also have the power and authority to affect the world.  The tongue has the power of life, death, and those who love it will eat its fruits (Proverbs 18:21).  Salvation also requires the confession of faith (Rom 10:10). Rev. Cho says that according to recent findings in Neurology, the speech center in the brain has strong influence on all the other nerves. Speech can give control over one’s body, to manipulate it in the way he wishes.  If we want to change our life, we need to change our language.  Negative speaking programs the third dimensional world negatively, but positive speaking programs the third dimensional life positively.

Install the software of the 4th Dimension Spirituality in Your Life

  Rev. Cho confesses that the fourth dimensional spirituality was a revelation from God while he was praying. The four channels are like the software programming human life.  In order to program the software, Christians need to pray and meditate and lean on the words of God, and be filled with the Holy Spirit.  Above all, Christian leaders need to learn how to pray in the Spirit unceasingly.  When we orient our thinking, dreams, faith, and language to the image of the Holy Spirit, creative change and miracles take place in the three dimensional world.  God’s thinking and visions become ours.
