[Column] Do Away with Hypocritical Faith

Do Away with Hypocritical Faith

Written By Rev.Dr. Joshua Hong

The employees of a certain company were engaging in a heated debate about “Christianity and Hypocrisy” during lunch. A young man from the group harsh criticized all Christians labeling them as hypocrites. A Christian employee could not stand such an accusation any more and suddenly stood up saying, “I admit that there are hypocrites among churchgoers but there are many sincere believers. I myself am a churchgoer and believer of Christ but I do not consider myself too much of a hypocrite.” Upon hearing this rebuttal, the young man asked him, “Do you believe that the Bible is the Word of God?” The Christian said he firmly believed it. The young man then asked again, “The Bible also says those who do not believe in Christ at the children of darkness and hell bound. Is that true?” The Christian replied affirmatively.

The young man yet again asked another question, “There are about 500 employees in our company, most of who are not Christians. You are implying that they will be judged and sent to hell because they are unbelievers. Right?” There was no answer. The young man retorted, “During your five years of your employment at this company, how often have prayed for and evangelized your coworkers who are cursed and hell bound? How earnestly did you try to have them believe in Christ? How many did you evangelize and bring to the knowledge of God? Are your belief in God and eternal salvation everything?” The Christian employee was speechless. He realized that he was the hypocrite of faith. It was obvious to him that he never once prayed for or evangelized his non-believing coworkers who may be drawing near to eternal damnation while he always prayed for his personal sanctity and the well being of his loved ones.

How would you respond to the questions posed by this young man? Do you call yourself a Christian and have the form of godliness without sharing the lifesaving gospel? We must have the true faith. We must let go of Saul’s hypocrisy and artificiality and zero in on evangelization as did Paul after his conversion. Romans 10:13-14 read, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?” The message of these verses is that one has to hear the gospel to believe in Christ. And to hear that gospel there has to be someone who preaches. Only God saves but He uses people as the channel of salvation. There may be many around you, family, friends, coworkers, etc, who need salvation in Christ. God called you first into faith not to grant you alone personal piety, comfort, and eternal salvation but to save many others around you. Truly happy and blessed are those who have realized the calling of evangelization. May each and every one of you live in the fullness of true happiness and blessing!
