[Column] You are the Masterpiece of God

The first verse we encounter at the beginning of the Bible is “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Let us inscribe this in our hearts. Just as there is a maker for a timepiece and a builder for a house, there is the Creator of the universe. Not only did He create all things, but He is also governing them. Hebrew 1:3 says God (Jesus) is “sustaining all things by his powerful word.” Most tides rise and fall only to a certain level. What would happen if they rise over 300 feet and engulf the land? There would be frequent tsunamis and catastrophic disasters. Because God governs the universe and orders the tidal waves to subside before they reach the land, most tides fall. If the temperature of the sun increases by 10º, land vegetation would not grow properly. Why does the sun maintain its temperature? Why do stars remain in their constellations? It is divine providence.

British Physicist Sir Robert Boyd from London University once said now the famous hymn “How Great Thou Art” was the his confession of faith:

O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder
Consider all The works Thy Hand hath made,
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
Thy pow’r throughout the universe displayed;
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!

The universe is not chaos formed by accidents and randomness but a cosmos created by the harmony and wisdom of God.

Of all God’s wondrous creations, man is the masterpiece for only he was created in God’s image. Psalm 139:13-15 states:

For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.

According to meteorologists and tidal experts, no two waves are identical in shape and no two snowflakes are alike. Further, even billions of sand particles on the beach have different structures from one another. How amazing is this? It is same with people as well. No two people look alike. Even brothers and sisters from the same parents differ sharply in their appearance. Moreover, it goes without saying that even twins have their own distinct and slightly different physical characteristics. Everyone’s hair texture is different. Fingernails are different. Vocal tones and timbres are different. Palm lines are different. How wondrous is this? You are the one and only existing unique individual in the universe. Therefore, you are God’s true masterpiece.

The price of a Picasso is estimated to be in the range of $100 million. Although no one is selling it, Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa is currently assessed at $600 million. How much more valuable would each and every one of you be? Thus Our Lord said one person’s life is more valuable than everything in the world. Why so? Because man who was created in the image of God has a soul, which neither dies nor disappears. While the natural world, animals, and plants one day pass away, man possessed of a soul lives on forever. Because man was created in God’s image, he can experience the true rest and eternal life only in God. Apart from Him, life has no meaning. Let us come forward to God, our spiritual parent. Let us also be mindful that only God is the hope in our lives. Then, we will live a blessed life of service to God according to our purposes.
