[Column] Your Self-Image Really Matters

Your Self-Image Really Matters

Written By Rev.Dr. Joshua Hong

It is very important how you see yourself.  When Satan tries to attack you, he concentrates on downgrading your self-image. He whispers to you: "You are useless, you are poor, you are inferior, etc." Because the wellspring of life is in your thinking (Proverb 4:23), Satan knows well that it is very effective to attack your self-image to ruin your life. Leaders with low self-image have a tendency to bring about negative results to the people and to community they lead, although they are in high positions (or profile). Therefore whenever God raises up leaders, the first thing He does is to change their self-identity and self-image. When God called Abram, he later changed his name to Abraham which means the father of all nations. The name Abraham must have reminded him of his self-image: "Oh, I am called to be the father of all nations in faith by God. Therefore I must put my faith in God who calls things that are not as though they were." The self-identity and self-image of Abraham got him to believe that God gives life to the dead and makes all things possible (cf. Romans 4:17).

When I was eighteen years old, one year before entering college, I went to a prayer mountain to pray and fast for three days beginning on the first day of the New Year. On the third day of my fasting and praying, God impressed my heart strongly by the Word of Joshua chapter 1. I cannot forget the moving of my heart by the Word. It seems that God spoke to my heart: "you are called to be like Joshua. I will be with you in all your days. Be strong and bold. You will lead many of my people into the land of Canaan (which means the Kingdom of God now)." I had tears in my eyes by the grace and calling of God, and since that time my Biblical name became Joshua. Long time later, I had a chance of meeting two other pastors in different instances (one female, one male) who had a gift of prophecy. They all prayed for me and gave the Word of God saying, "God wants to give you the Word, Joshua Chapter 1." By God's grace, my biblical name and self-identity were confirmed by their message, and I was able to have more conviction that I am called and loved and used by God.

In order to have positive self-image in your life, you must remember the wonderful love of God. Many people are tormented by the negative self-image that they are not loved. The Cross of Jesus Christ shows us the double meanings: the sinful nature of man and the wonderful love of God. How much sinful sinners we are to the extent that God the Father had to crucify His only begotten son, Jesus Christ on the cross. Furthermore, how much He loved us to the extent that God the Father had to crucify His only begotten son, Jesus Christ on the cross to save us. When you look at the cross, you have to remember that God really loves you and forgave your sins on the cross. Isaiah 49:15 says: "Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you. See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me."

When you feel useless and depressed, try to remember that you are now being loved by God, the Almighty creator of the Universe who sent His only begotten son, Jesus Christ, for you. The sense of God's love will give you energy and positive self-image. Do not fall into the trap of Satan who attacks you by a negative self-image! You are the son and daughter of God the Father. Be proud and be encouraged. When you love yourself in God, then you can love your family, neighbors, and people around you. Your self-image can be the barometer of success or failure, and happiness or unhappiness in your life.
